CHARACTER INFORMATION
Character Name: Saul Goodman (This name is an alias. His birth name is Jimmy McGill)
Age: 49
Canon: Breaking Bad/Better Call Saul
Canon Point: Just after Season 6 of Better Call Saul. He is done with Lalo Salamanca but has not begun working with Jesse Pinkman and Walter White yet.
Character Information: https://breakingbad.fandom.com/wiki/Jimmy_McGill
Personality:
”There are Wolves and Sheep in this world, kid. You gotta decide which one you’re gonna be.” -A Con-Man to a 9-year-old Jimmy in his dad’s convenience store
The first thing people notice about Saul is how sleazy he is. It’s almost like a caricature of what a lawyer is in the movies (Which Saul does enjoy. Particularly older TV shows like I Love Lucy). He is not above bending the law by any means. His life motto could be “the ends justify the means.”
He started off as a conman at 9 years old, taking money from his father’s register. It started off as just old coins he thought were valuable and, after seeing he could get away with that, he moved on to bigger schemes.
He was always coming up with “get rich quick schemes” like Slippin’ Jimmy (He slips on ice and begs for help until people give him money). He would also pull various other cons with his best friend Marco back in Cicero, Illinois through his teen years and most of his young adult life.
He’s the guy who: “knows a guy, who knows a guy, who knows another guy” to get his dirty work done. He doesn’t like getting his own hands too dirty with violence.
He often uses people like Huell Babineaux, his office security, to do jobs for him like, making an extra set of keys to steal Howard Hamlin’s car for a scheme he and Kim Wexler were pulling to make Howard look like an unstable person and ruin his career. Saul also has a guy from a “vacuum company” that, for a certain high price, can make you “disappear” and get you a new identity.
He is full of plenty of tips and tricks to get people out of fixes. Most of them are extra-legal but that’s how he became one of the best criminal lawyers in New Mexico.
He is often shown making lewd remarks to Francesca (he is shown saying “Man, you are killing me with that booty!” to her just before Jesse Pinkman and Walter White kidnap him), his female assistant and even flirted Skyler White, Walter White’s wife, right in front of Walter by saying: “Clearly his taste in women is the same as his taste in lawyers: only the very best, with just the right amount of dirty.”
”If I was to tell you where he was, I couldn’t live with myself, I’m sorry.”
*Mike moves towards him. He springs up from his spot on the floor. He writes while talking*
”But who’s to say I didn’t leave it in my day planner! Uh, don’t touch anything on my desk, I’m gonna go get a Nescafé.”- during Mike’s meeting concerning Jesse Pinkman’s whereabouts
Saul has a tendency to be cowardly. When threatened with violence, he folds like a lawn chair, usually spilling his guts on everything he knows or saying whatever he can to save himself.
In the quote above, Mike wanted to know where Jesse Pinkman was, so he went to Saul, knowing the lawyer would know something. Saul talked about “lawyer-client privilege” and how he wasn’t supposed to talk about his clients. When Mike moved to potentially beat the information out of him, he sprang up and wrote the address on a piece of paper claiming to have left it there and quickly left the room so Mike could get it without him seeing so he could have deniability.
Walter often used threats of violence to get Saul to work for him. Examples of this include him and Jesse kidnapping the lawyer and holding him at gunpoint in the desert over a grave dug for him and Walter getting in his face and saying “we’re not done until I say we’re done” anytime Saul threatened to quit.
Threats are usually the fastest way characters in Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul get Saul to do what they want him to.
”It’s the way of the world, kid. Go with the winner.”-Saul to an outraged Jesse when he decides to work for Walter instead.
Saul is very cynical and is often looking out for himself before others.
When Walter White and Jesse Pinkman kidnapped him and put a gun to his head in front of an open grave in the desert, the first thing out of his mouth was: “It wasn’t me! It was Ignacio!” He was incredibly quick to shove the blame on someone else.
After Walter and Jesse’s disagreement about Walter working for Gustavo Fring, Jesse and Walter argue in his office. Walter offers Saul a 3 million dollar cut if he stays with him. Naturally, Saul takes the arrangement. Money is one of the larger motivators for Saul as that is pretty much all he has left to live for since Kim is out of his life now and his family is all deceased. Jesse was angry at him for this and that’s when he shrugged and told Jesse that’s just how the world is.
Another example of Jimmy looking out for himself is when everything went downhill for Walter White and Jesse Pinkman and it was all coming back to bite him because he help Walter and Jesse with their meth empire, he called his “vacuum guy” used the money he made helping Walter, packed extra money in a suitcase, and ran, leaving his life behind completely and everyone left in it (like Francesca, for example) to pick up after this mess on their own. Most of what he does, he does to help himself. To Hell with what happens to everyone else. That’s not his problem.
There was only a handful of times in the whole show he did things for others. These times were taking care of his older brother Chuck by buying him groceries and getting gas for his lanterns and stove when Chuck could no longer leave his house due to his hypersensitivity to electricity that seemed to cause him physical distress.
Even though Chuck was often very harsh towards Jimmy, often saying how he “wasn’t a real lawyer” and was still “Slippin’ Jimmy,” claiming that Jimmy would always be a conman and never change, Jimmy still insisted that Chuck was his brother and wanted to help him anyway.
This may have largely been due to the fact that both their mother and father were deceased and they were the only two McGills remaining but he still loved his brother. Jimmy would continue to take care of Chuck for years until Chuck revealed that he never cared about Jimmy and later killed himself by intentionally lighting his own home on fire with himself inside.
The other times were all for Kim Wexler. A former coworker when he worked at Hamlin Hamlin and McGill Law Firm (HHM) and his lover, later turned wife.
He tried to be a good, clean lawyer when he started out when she asked him to. Granted, he only lasted a short period in elder law before moving onto more shady territory for more money and bending more rules to get to the money faster, but he still made an attempt for Kim.
The whole scheme to make Howard Hamlin look like a cocaine addict was initiated by Kim. He was shocked at first but went along with it once he saw that this was something she really wanted. He was a good con man, confident in his abilities and strongly disliked Howard too, so he was willing to scheme with her, especially if it made her happy.
During all of the business with Lalo Salamanca, he tried his best to keep him away from her. A most notable example was when Lalo seemingly “came back from the dead” and showed up in their home. They were both frightened out of their wits.
Lalo suggested Saul go and kill Gustavo Fring (a rival of the Salamancas) and Kim stay with Lalo. Should Saul fail to kill Gus in one hour and return, Lalo would kill Kim. Saul convinced Lalo to send Kim instead to carry out the murder.
While this may seem selfish, he really was just trying to keep her from harm. Leaving a beautiful woman alone with a strange man is never good and Lalo would kill her if he wasn’t fast enough. So, to keep her safe, he convinced Lalo to send Kim out and keep him instead.
Tuco: "Wow. You got a mouth on you."
Jimmy: "Thank you."
-A conversation between Jimmy and Tuco
He is loquacious to a fault. Especially when frightened, his mouth does not stop running. Tuco Salamanca referred to him as “The one with the mouth.” When a scheme with two skater boys when wrong, landing him in big trouble with Tuco (the twins tried their scam on the wrong car, followed it home and it turned out to be Tuco’s grandmother, who they ended up insulting in front of Tuco), he talked so much that he somehow talked the twins out of trouble twice. Once at Tuco’s house and a second time shortly after when Tuco was going to kill the twins in the desert.
His career as a lawyer was greatly helped by this as many of his clients got off or lessened sentences with him. He is known for his long-winded court explanations to get the court to sympathize with his clients. He is excellent at persuading others.
He boasts about convincing a woman he was Kevin Costner. Granted, they were both intoxicated but it worked for the night and got the woman and her friend to sleep with him.
He is most talkative when he feels threatened. If he is afraid someone would beat him up or kill him, he will spill everything he knows and will try to say anything he can to protect himself, pacify the angry party and/or get himself out of the situation.
His silver tongue is, perhaps, his most useful quality as a lawyer as it has made him into a millionaire.
Now, as much of a gift as it is, he does tend to talk too much. During Breaking Bad, Walter White is often seen telling him “Stop talking, Saul” on the phone when he calls as the man tends to ramble.
”Did you not plan for this contingency? Well next time, do. The Starship Enterprise had a self-destruct button. I’m just saying.”
Saul is a rather clever man. He is often the “problem solver” of Breaking Bad as whenever things go wrong, Walter and Jesse always come right to Saul’s office or call him.
He is great at coming up with schemes that make him plenty of money. Ever since he was in high school making fake IDs for his older classmates all the way into adulthood, when he came up with the idea to get potential clients by selling mobile phones to seedy people and offering them legal services later on for the year he was on probation and couldn’t practice law.
The above quote may seem a bit silly but it also shows that he knows a lot about human nature. People tend to betray each other more often than not. He’s seen it happen with his own brother refusing to hire him at his law firm because Chuck didn’t think he was good enough of a lawyer to do it.
Saul has lived a life full of experience. In the criminal world as a con man and in the courtroom as a mailroom clerk, a public defender and a lawyer with his own practice. With all that experience, comes knowledge. He knows the ins and outs of the law very well. He uses this to his advantage in his career and gets his client the best deals he can.
“Walt Told Me You Took A Run At This Bogdan Character, And He Wrestled You Into Submission With His Eyebrows."-Saul to Skyler when she failed at getting the car wash from Bogdan
Even as Jimmy McGill, Saul was always full of witty remarks and quips like this. Humor is his defense mechanism against tense situations and awkward encounters. This is also how he wins over some of his clients.
When he worked in elder law, the old ladies loved him. He made them laugh and smile with his jokes. For example, when he saw the older people playing a board game, he looked over and said “No cheating!” teasingly to them making the group chuckle.
The above quote was when Skyler White wanted to buy the car wash from Bogdan, Walter’s former boss there. Bogdan was displeased with how Walter quit the car wash and was rude to Skyler and Saul was making a jab at his huge, bushy eyebrows here.
During his break from the law when he moved back to Cicero for a while and convinced two women to sleep with him, thinking he was Kevin Costner, when the two woke up and realized he wasn’t the celebrity, they started to leave and he asked them to at least stay to get dressed. One of the girls yells “screw you!” back at him and he responds “you build it, I will come.”
He makes plenty of movie references too. When Jesse was trying to tell him Bager wouldn’t spill to the DEA about anything he said that Badger would “sing like Celine Dion” and is often shown in the courtroom bathrooms saying “it’s showtime!” just before going into court after giving himself a pep talk.
"Now, Chet was connected, see? Like, uh, Cicero connected. So, usually, I'd be looking at malicious mischief, public intoxication, disorderly conduct, maybe, but he's got the D.A. saying indecent exposure, calling me a sex offender. What? One little Chicago sunroof, and suddenly I'm Charles Manson?!? And that's where it all went off the rails. I've been paying for it ever since. That's why I'm here! I don't…You know what? Any of this stuff you want, come get it. Kitty-cat notebooks for everybody!" -Jimmy ranting in the Bingo Hall to all of the residents at Sandpiper Crossing
While he was Jimmy McGill, Saul seemed to be very unlucky. From the Chicago Sunroof Incident described above, to the struggle he faced while he was first getting into law as a public defender. Not to mention he had plenty of schemes fall through. Most of the reasons why these schemes fail is because he needs to pull the plug on these schemes for people he cares about like Kim or Chuck.
When he wanted to make Chuck look incompetent in court by forging the addresses for the streets into different numbers, Chuck acted like he was relapsing in his illness and saying he felt useless and like he was officially losing his mind.
Feeling sorry for his older brother, Jimmy told him the truth and confessed to forgery. Chuck was able to get him on tape confessing without him knowing and attempted to get Jimmy disbarred. This ended in a year-long suspension from his practice.
He also tried to do things the “right way” for Kim Wexler because he loved and respected her opinion of him so much that he wanted to make her happy no matter what. Even if it meant he would have to stop some schemes that would get him lots of money.
"Did you see those suckers? That one asshole was crying, he had actual tears! Jesus, Kim! Listen, I started reading the letter, and I just knew it wasn't... I could tell by their faces it wasn't gonna be enough, right? So I just went off on this flow, you know? I had this energy going through me. It was like improv or jazz and then boom! Sunk the hook in! "I'm so lucky I have this letter." God! I could see the Matrix, you know! I was invincible! I could dodge bullets, baby! And you were right, you were right – it was all about Chuck! The whole time!" -Jimmy to Kim about the hearing
Saul has the tendency to be rather manipulative. If he sees a way to get something he wants and it looks easy and fast, he will jump on it in a heartbeat. Jimmy showed some of this after Chuck died and he went to get reinstated as a lawyer. He went into the courtroom and began to read from his deceased brother’s note he left him after he passed. He then stopped and looked up tearfully and said that he wouldn’t read it because he wanted this to be honest and told the court how he knew how great of a lawyer his brother was and wanted to “earn the name McGill.”
Immediately after being reinstated, he changed his name to Saul Goodman, no longer practicing under the name McGill, and bragged to Kim about seeming to “fool” the court into giving him his license back.
This whole scene showed that this wasn’t just the Saul Goodman persona we see in Breaking Bad that was corrupt, Jimmy seemed to have corruption built in his nature behind his good intentions and hopes of climbing the ladder of success.
Even Chuck once said: “My brother is not a bad person. He has a good heart. It’s just he can’t help himself. And everyone’s left picking up the pieces.”
Jimmy wasn’t necessarily a bad person. He has good intentions a lot of times but his own wants tend to overpower his care for others and he gets reckless and makes mistakes or ends up hurting people around him.
This can lead him to be manipulative. As long as he gets what he wants, who he hurts won’t matter in the moment. The ends always justify the means.
"I'm Gonna Be A Damn Good Lawyer, And People Are Gonna Know About It."
His ambitious nature is shown in the way He went from conman, to struggling public defender, to the most well-known lawyer in Albuquerque. From severe debt to millionaire.
No matter how much he struggled, he was still determined to be somebody to remember one day. The above quote was like him manifesting his own future.
Even though he made plenty of mistakes and had an opportunity to go back to his old life as a conman in Cicero, he turned it down because he wanted to be something great like Chuck was. Not through a life of crime but through his ability as a lawyer.
A lot of his push to be a successful lawyer the right way also came from support from Kim and her encouraging him to do better than cons and schemes.
Taking her advice, he uses his wit, knowledge of the law and silver tongue to meet new potential clients, gained their trust by taking cases that would seem like losing cases and giving people, who were certainly guilty, the best defense he could and taking people who would have gotten years in prison and getting them off with a fine and a few months of community service.
Jimmy McGill to Saul Goodman
There’s a lot to consider when asking why Jimmy made the change from Jimmy McGill we see at the start of Better Call Saul to the Saul Goodman persona we meet in Breaking Bad.
Chuck
First, let’s talk about his history. Namely with his brother. Chuck was already a successful lawyer when Jimmy was still a con man as a young adult. He had already made a name for himself and was starting up his own firm with Howard Hamlin and Howard’s father, Hamlin,Hamlin and McGill (HHM).
Chuck had always held a sort of resentment to Jimmy since they were younger. He saw Jimmy was dishonest when he was a 9 year-old kid taking money from their father’s register in the convenience store. When Chuck would bring his concern to his family, they would dismiss him and say “no! Jimmy would never do that.”
Chuck was angry that Jimmy could get away with anything and there was no consequences to his actions
When Jimmy was arrested for the Chicago Sunroof Incident, Chuck only agreed to help him if Jimmy truly understood that he messed up big time here and promised to drop ALL of the cons he was currently involved with and turn his life around by moving with Chuck back to Albuquerque and getting a job in the HHM mailroom where he could keep an eye on Jimmy. Jimmy agreed and moved in with Chuck.
After a while, Jimmy moved out into the back of a Vietnamese nail salon. This also doubled as his office for the start of his law career.
Jimmy always strived to make Chuck proud, as plenty of younger siblings want from their older siblings. He saw Chuck’s success as a lawyer. How respected he was, and wanted that for himself too.
Jimmy did online courses at the American Samoa Law School and took the bar 3 times before he passed it.
He proudly showed Chuck his accomplishments and wanted to be hired at HHM to work with him. Chuck told him he was proud but Chuck felt inside that Jimmy took a shortcut with online classes and wasn’t a “real” lawyer. He didn’t let Howard hire Jimmy and, angered by this, Jimmy started his own practice and quit HHM.
Jimmy loved his brother very much. He took care of him when Chuck could no longer get out of his house due to Chuck developing electromagnetic hypersensitivity (EHS).
Jimmy went to the store and got him food, gas for his stove, oil for his lanterns. No matter how much they disagreed, Jimmy would help him until Chuck revealed to him one day that Jimmy “never actually mattered that much to him.”
This broke Jimmy’s heart and he gave the responsibility of caring for Chuck to Howard saying he was done.
Chuck’s suicide sent Jimmy in a depressive state. He wouldn’t talk, he hardly cried for his dead brother. He just stared off into space and drank with Kim.
He was upset he was dead but at the same time, he didn’t feel much else about the situation. Everyone around him was crying and mourning but he seemed to be almost numb. He knew Chuck didn’t care about him, he already mourned Chuck and what could have been a brotherly relationship a long time ago.
”I don't think about Chuck, okay?! I don't miss Chuck! Chuck was alive, and now he's dead, and that's that! Finito! Life goes on, so sue me!"- Jimmy to Kim concerning Chuck’s death
Kim
Kim was the next big influence in Jimmy’s life that pushed him to become Saul later.
While in the mailroom at HHM, Kim inspired him to want to be a lawyer. He saw she helped people and was well respected like Chuck was and he wanted that too.
Kim was all Jimmy had left after Chuck. She was the only one left that truly cared for him.
She supported him and pushed him forward and tried to get him to be a better person for years. All through the beginning of his career, Kim was his biggest supporter. She was his best friend, his lover and later, his wife.
He had an amazing time with her and continued to love for years and years after they were separated. Even after the Walter White situation, he still called her from Nebraska as Gene Talkavic and was happy when Franchesca mentioned Kim asked her if he was still alive.
After she left, when she decided they were no longer good for the people around them, Jimmy had no one left to push him to become better.
Jimmy, feeling gutted after Kim left, completely retreated into the Saul Goodman persona he made for himself as a lawyer. Money and his career was pretty much all he had left to keep going now that he had no one else to care for him. No one left to be better for.
Jesse: Anyways... This guy. Any good?"
Kim: "When I knew him, he was."-Kim and Jesse concerning Jimmy
Saul Goodman is a self-centered, ambulance-chasing, greedy, “I put the “criminal” in “criminal attorney,” a showman kind of lawyer.
Saul is basically all the traits people think of in a stereotypical lawyer and exaggerated to an almost comedic proportion.
Saul Goodman is a mask. A shield Jimmy wears to gather confidence and hide the fact that he is now a shell of who he used to be.
Jimmy McGill remains buried under Saul Goodman most of the time unless he is in extreme emotional distress or dangerous situations that crack the mask but this rarely occurs as this is a persona he’s worn for years and has been crafting for just as long. He is very good at keeping it up. Like a turtle in his shell. One would think that’s all there is to him if there weren't moments we saw past the persona.
He struggles with the guilt of all he's done. All the lives he ruined. Howard’s by making up that cocaine addict lie about him and helping Kim convince others of this, Chuck’s by making him look foolish in court and having his insurance drop him (this was the event that many considered (including Jimmy himself) to be what caused Chuck to take his own life), and Kim Wexler by corrupting her down to his level.
These people all had promising futures ahead of them and Jimmy feels partially (at the very least) responsible for what became of all of them. Thus, why Saul Goodman was created. So he could bury this guilt. It doesn’t make it go away. The persona only covers it up.

[Thankfully it was only himself and a few other people in the restaurant but he was growing impatient. He tapped his foot on the tile as he glared at the downpour outside. He glanced at his watch and groaned. It was past closing time by now. He hoped Franchesca remembered to lock up before she, undoubtedly, sped home before the rain. He didn’t have any other appointments scheduled anyway for the day when he left in case this ran long but he was still annoyed.]

[Now Saul didn't remember how he got here. He was currently looking up at a massive sign that says "Welcome to San Benedicto City."]
Here goes nothing.
[Saul mumbled to himself as he walked through the city. He watched the people pass him by and was nervous to talk to anyone. He was a bit wary of people but he also wanted to ask questions like: How did I get here? What is this place?]

You're assigned a group project. What role do you end up taking?
Saul would take on the leader role. He would try and come up with what it is they're doing the project on, pitch the idea to the group and assign roles on who's doing what. He would find the best way for everyone to get the project do quickly and with a decent outcome.
He's done this with many personal projects (like framing those pictures with a guy that looked like a judge they were using to mediate the Sandpiper case to make Howard look crazy and/or incompetent) so he is capable of handling a leadership role in things like this.
You have the chance to anonymously send a letter to someone who's wronged you in the past. What does it say?
Dear Chuck, what can I honestly say here? I tried my damnedest to take care of you. I made things so easy for you, you didn't have to lift a finger if you didn't want to. I don't know what I did to make you hate me, your own brother, so much. I don't know how to prove to you that I'm trying to be a better person and I AM a "real lawyer." I worked just as hard as you did to get my law degree. I may not have gone to some fancy college, but I worked for it dammit. I took the bar three times!
I know I was a big screw up in the past but guess what? I'm not that guy anymore. I have my own practice, my own office and I did it all through my own hard work.
So thanks, I guess, Chuck. Thanks for motivating me to do better so I can rub your big nose in it.
Someone you admire very much has just done something you find reprehensible. How do you deal with the situation?
There isn't much one can do to scare off Saul Goodman. Even if you managed something absolutely atrocious, he would try to hear you out.
Saul's first reaction would be disbelief, then he would try and figure out their reasoning behind it. He would confront them and ask why they did what they did. If the reasoning wasn't good enough, his next reaction would be one of three: fear, anger or grief. He would try and talk things out but if that doesn't work, he would have to distance himself from them for his own well being.
If you could achieve all your goals right now, what would your life look like?
Stacks of cash to spare, a big house done in the most gaudy style a rich white man could do with greek influence. Perhaps a partner who loves him very much and plenty of respect with a law firm of his own that everyone knows about because he is the best of the best in the law business. No more sketchy clients like Walter White or the Salamancas, just him, living the best life, floating on a floaty in the pool in the sun with a cool drink in his hands.
Someone tells you all your flaws. What did they tell you, and are they right or wrong?
Saul Goodman is a sleazy, greedy, ambulance-chasing, scumbag of a human to others. A showman who loves to put on a show for his clients
They aren't really wrong about him. He's not particularly a terrible person. Yes, he's greedy and can act sleazy. He cuts corners when he can and pounces on any opportunity to make things easier on himself but that doesn't make him a bad person, does it?
Who isn't out for their own best interest these days?
Oh yeah, and he talks WAY too much but that's also true. What lawyer doesn't?
✘ Type: RANDOM! But Opt-out on Mechanical
✘ Powers:
Power 1: Silver Tongue: He can manipulate others really well. He's great at coming u with believable lies and excuses when he wants to and knows how to please people so he can get away with a lot of BS.
This ability does not always work. He has gotten punches before for his mouth and not all people are prone to his foolery. Honestly if your character is particularly skeptical or has a higher than average intelligence, this likely won't work.
Power 2: Spider Sense: Basically, he can sense when there's trouble. You ever been in a situation where you know you messed up and you're just waiting for the consequences to arrive? That's how this works. He has a sort of gut feeling that things are about to go south and it is usually right.
This ability can be influenced by his emotion. If he's feeling particularly anxious, he may sense danger where there is none.
Power 3: Charisma: He can adapt pretty fast to his surroundings once he's there. He can also make friends rather easy because he knows that good connections with people get you far. A big people-pleaser and isn't afraid to get to know someone. He'll try and figure out what you need out of him as a person and appeal to that.
He is not everyone's cup of tea. Basically if your character isn't the friendly type and doesn't want to be messed with or can't take a joke all that well, Saul will likely end up putting you off. He can come off as annoying or manipulative on the worst times.
✘ Inventory: Saul comes in a pink suit with a light blue undershirt and a pink tie and brown shoes. He has a ring on his left pink from his deceased friend Marco. He also has a briefcase with him with some files of basically who he is, a couple of throw away phones, a small, gold revolver, some extra cash and a pen in his suit pocket.

Saul Goodman/ Jimmy McGill Application
May. 11th, 2023 02:47 pmTo be redeemed, perhaps a warden could work with him on being less selfish and think more on others and how his actions can affect those around him.
Chuck McGill, his older brother, was resentful of his younger brother since they were kids. He was upset Jimmy could get away with anything and there was almost no consequences for him when he was young. Chuck got him out of jail for the "Chicago Sunroof Incident" in exchange for Jimmy to turn his life around and work in the Hamlin Hamlin and McGill Law Firm Mailroom. Jimmy did so and later became a lawyer so he could make his brother proud and get the same respect Chuck had from being a successful lawyer.
Chuck developed EHS Electromagnetic Hypersensitivity and couldn't leave his house anymore so Jimmy got him groceries, the mail and took care of Chuck until Chuck revealed that he "never mattered that much" to him.
Jimmy stopped caring for Chuck and got his medical malpractice insurance canceled, ruined Chuck's career as a lawyer and Chuck later killed himself by setting his own home on fire with himself inside.
Howard Hamlin was affected when him and Kim made him look like a cocaine addict to ruin his career and were successful in doin so through schemes and tricks. When Howard came to Jimmy and Kim's apartment to confront the two, Lalo Salamanca came into their home and killed Howard.
Kim Wexler's life was ruined by this man because, before she met him, she Wass on her way to be a successful lawyer. He dragged her down to his level by doing cons with her and "having too much fun" before Kim decided they were bad for everyone around them and divorced him
Saul Goodman may not have carried out the murders committed by Walter White and his associates but he did know they were happening and did nothing to stop them simply because he didn't want to be killed himself. The families of the people killed (like Hank Shrader's (DEA) wife, and Howard's wife) were also affected by his selfish actions and schemes.
Without Saul Goodman's legal expertise and assistance, Walter White would have never been able to build a successful meth empire like he did. Saul admitted to helping him and keeping him out of jail intentionally.
Key Traits: Jimmy tends to be very talkative and often used his silver tongue to get out of sticky situations. He also tends to be manipulative and even used the note his brother left him after he died to guilt-trip the court into reinstating him as a lawyer when he got suspended for a year for committing forgery (this was to make Chuck look incompetent in court). Jimmy can also be considered cowardly as he folds like a lawn chair as soon as he is threatened with violence.
World View: He knows a lot on human nature from experience. He knows criminals tends to act stupid out of desperation and need lawyers like him to get them out of it. He also knows that people can't be trusted. He mentioned that even the Star Ship Enterprise had a self-destruct button. This shows he knows people tend to betray each other. In short, he is very skeptical of people and their intentions.
General Temperament: Saul tends to be sleazy, talkative and rather excitable should things not go his way. In emergencies, he tends to panic or run and hide. His self-preservation can be his most prominent trait as he will say anything and everything he knows to save himself when it comes down to it.
In combat situations, he is useless as he is out of shape and gets winded after only a few punches in a boxing match with Howard Hamlin.
Path to Redemption:
Things to Change: Jimmy would likely need to work on his selfishness, his tendency for dishonesty and lack of empathy for people around him that aren't all that close to him. He really needs to tune his moral compass as morals don't seem to be mattering all that much to him. He doesn't want harm or death to come to others but other than that, he doesn't seem to care about anything outside of his own needs.
Milestones: Obviously he needs to realize that there is a problem with how he acts. He thinks this is just how everyone really feels and doesn't see much wrong with is selfishness. He feels a lot of guilt that he holds onto under the Saul Goodman mask and needs come to terms with all of this, he needs to learn to find happiness in something other than money. Money has been a key motivator in his career. It gives freedom and he chases it for happiness. He needs to also learn to think about how something does may effect people down the line as his lack of planning ahead is what leads to people getting hurt.
Reaction to the Barge: His initial reaction would be confusion, then anger. Who do these people think they are, telling people they need to change? Why do they care? Why does all that matter so much? Who's in charge here anyway? He'd want to know so he can speak to them. Once it sinks in that this is his last chance, he will ask what he needs to do and see how fast he can fix it to leave. That's just how he goes through his problems in life.
What Type of Wardening Works Best? He needs someone who won't take his BS and can be a bt harsh when necessary. He can be stubborn and not always realize what's best for him. However, It would be nice if they had a gentle side too. He is an emotional person under his person and has a lot of guilt to process.
What Type of Wardening Will Not Work? Considering how stubborn he tends to be, he may need some tough love in a few places so someone who gives in easy will not work. He can be manipulative if you let him be. Keep in mind, he has a shell to crack before you get to the real him.
Triggers to Change: Mostly the fact that a second chance at life is better than the alternative. His self-preservation did him a favor there. Maybe he wants to finally be free from all the guilt of all the lives he screwed up and the change to do better the next time around does sound appealing to him.

Around Others (1)
What're you in for, kid? I ask cause you seem new here. I'm Saul Goodman, by the way. You might know me from my commercials. You don't? Oh. Well, today is your lucky day! You're looking at the best lawyer in the grand state on New Mexico.
[He grins, proudly. He watches your reaction to what he said]
I mean, A lawyer isn't all that helpful here, apparently. I can't fool the wardens!
[He lets out a chuckle at this. He's speaking from experience]
Well it was nice talking to ya. Let me know if you wanna chat again, alright?
To A Warden(2)
What are you? My therapist? Look, I do all this scheming because how else would I get on top? It's all I got in me these days. I don't know how to do things by the books. I tried but I always screw it up, okay? Is that what you wanted to hear? That I'm a pathetic screw up?
Grand Oxymoronic
[Jimmy woke up in his usual bed and rolled to his side. He noticed something in the corner of his cell. A beautiful blonde woman with her back to him. She looked a lot like...]
...Kim?
[He whispered, slowly getting out of bed and approaching the woman. He walked in front of her and was now face to face with his ex-wife. He felt tears come to his eyes. He found that, for once, he didn't know what to say. His mind raced with questions. Why are you here? How are you here? Did the wardens bring you?]
[He reached out to hug her with shaky arms and was met with....nothing. His arms went right through her. Her expression was unchanging and she looked forward with a small smile on her lips. She wasn't really here. She was a hologram.]
Oh..
[He stepped back from her, disappointed. he stared to holo-Kim for a few moments in silence]
When I said I wanted to speak with you again, I meant the real you, Kim. I wanted to tell you I was sorry. Sorry I dragged you into my messes and made you fix my mistakes. I'm sorry I ruined your career as a lawyer. I'm sorry about what happened to Howard..I'm honestly sorry you met me. Maybe if you didn't, you would be living a nice, successful and happy life and not...
[He stops. He hasn't spoken with Kim in years. He had no idea whether life was like in Florida without him]
I actually don't know what you're up to now. I'm sorry about that too. I hope it's good, whatever it is. I hope you met a nice guy who loves you and keeps you safe and happy. I hope you have a great job and lots of friends. A beautiful family. All what I didn't give you..
[He sighs. He looks up at holo-Kim. No response to his heart-felt words. Tears slip down his cheeks.]
God, I miss you, Kim.
Special Notes: Nothing to add here. I hope you guys like him!

May. 11th, 2023 12:51 pm[Saul Goodman sat in his office holding a tissue to his gushing nose. Blood was leaking from his face and he felt like he just got run over by a semi. He was still shook up about what just took place in his office.]
"What'd I do?!"
[He blubbered out, holding his hands in the air. Saul Goodman currently was kneeling in front of an infuriated Jesse Pinkman that was now pointing his own gun at him. Pinkman had just busted into his office and punched him square in the nose. He then proceeded to push him down and kick him mercilessly on the floor.]
[Saul should've expected this. He really should've. Never trust a drug addict, that's what he always said. They were way too unpredictable.]
"You stole it from me!"
[The man screamed at him. He was red with anger. His eyes were even bloodshot red. Saul had never seen someone this angry at him before.]
"What?"
[Now Saul did a lot of things, stealing certainly wasn't something he did often from drug addicts though. What could Pinkman possibly think he had that Saul would want?]
"The ricin! The ricin cigarette! You stole it and gave it Mr White and he poisoned a kid with it!"
"Okay! Yes! I had Huell lift it off of you. If I had known what he was going to do with it I never would've done it! You have to believe me!"
[It was true. There wasn't much that Saul Goodman was above doing but killing children, that was something he could never bring himself to do.]
[He heard Huell ask, he was poking his head into his office door. He seemed genuine but Saul was embarrassed about getting his ass handed to him in front of his employees. Huell was his security. He was supposed to make sure things like this didn't happen. Saul glared.]
"I'm fantastic."
[He sneered. Huell sighed and moved out of the doorway so Franchesca could come in with the first aid kit. She set it down on his desk looked over Saul's face. She put a few bandages on the scrap on his forehead.]
"Did we learn anything from this?"
[She asked it reminded Saul of his mother.]
"Yeah, get better security."
[He snarks and hisses as she puts disinfectant on his cheek and place another bandage on it.]
"I'll be back with Ice for that black eye."
[She says. Leaving the room. Saul sighs. That Pinkman really put a beating on him. He was gonna look like hell for weeks.]
City Character Application
May. 9th, 2023 09:09 pmAGE: 49
What impression does your character give when meeting someone for the first time? How does the first impression differ from your character’s true nature?
Saul comes across as a sleazy, greedy, selfish lawyer. If you meet him during a sticky situation, he seems like a coward and someone who talks way too much. This is all mostly true.
Saul can be very cowardly and only looks out for himself. Money is his main motivator in this life and he often does whatever he can to grow his career faster.
He has the capacity for empathy but he has to have a connection with the person first. Otherwise, he acts very selfishly.
Him constantly running his mouth can seem like a massive issue (and it certainly can be) but his silver tongue often gets him out of situations.
He is smarter than he looks. Many people assume he isn’t but he is the “fix it” man where he’s from. People in a jam can call him and he can talk down a life sentence to only a fine and some community service. He knows the ins and outs of the law extremely well thanks to his life as a former conman and all the cases he’s won so far.
How does your character handle stress? What do they do in an emergency?
Two words: Very Badly. When in danger or under a lot of stress, he cannot keep his mouth shut. He will spill everything he knows and say anything he can to save his skin and help himself.
When things get messy, he is one of the first people to run and hide if he knows he can’t talk his way out of it.
In emergency situations, it depends. His first mode is to panic and then he tries to use what he knows to solve the problem or find someone who knows how to fix it. He’s the guy who “knows a guy, who knows a guy, who knows another guy.” He even has the number for a vacuum repair guy who, for a steep price, can make you disappear and get you a new identity.
He can handle legal problems but physical injury is….difficult. Blood makes him queasy and broken bones freak him out too. There’s not a lot of medical knowledge there other than basic common sense so if someone is hurt, he’d likely call an ambulance or someone who can deal with this.
What are some of your character's regrets? How is your character impacted by them?
Saul is FULL of regrets. He feels responsible for his older brother, Chuck’s suicide because he made his insurance get dropped out of anger and ruined his reputation and career in law by making im look mentally unstable and incompetant. He ruined Howard Hamilin’s good name by helping Kim Wexler make him look like a cocaine addict and he, indirectly, got him killed (Howard came to their home to confront Jimmy and Kim on their schemes to make him look bad and Lalo Salamanca came in and shot him), he feels he ruined his lover and ex-wife, Kim Wexler’s life by corrupting her and dragging her down to his level (even though she helps him willingly with his schemes). On top of all of that, he holds guilt for the people who got hurt or killed because of his schemes or actions and the victims' families.
His biggest regret was loosing Kim Wexler. She divorced him because she felt that they were bad for everyone around them and after this, Jimmy had no one left to care about him (his family was all deceased and Kim was all he had left). He retreated fully into the Saul Goodman persona and tried to bury all this guilt and self-hatred under it.
Jimmy is still there under Saul but only comes out in extreme situations once the persona breaks.
What are your character’s ambitions/goals? Why are they important to your character?
Money is his main motivator at this point. Saul hopes to become a successful lawyer that everyone knows and recognises.
He mainly wants these things because he knows Chuck was highly respected as a successful lawyer and he wants money because that’s something he’s been chasing his whole life. Ever since he was 9 years-old, stealing coins he thought were valuable from his father’s cash drawer at the convenience store.
What are your character’s fears? How do they hinder or challenge your character?
Saul is scared of pain I believe. Anytime someone threatens him with violence, he folds like a lawn chair and spills his guts. This isn’t necessarily an odd fear as most people don’t want to be physically harmed.
He also has an aversion to the desert as his life has been threatened on many different occurrences out there.
In Breaking Bad, he is seen yelling “Anywhere but the desert!” to Walter and Jesse after they kidnap the lawyer.
These fears don’t necessarily hinder him. He’s just very likely to spill his guts when threatened and nervous (thus, more talkative) around people who seem like they could hurt him.
- Silver Tongue:He is really good at talking his way out of situations.
- Legal Knowledge: With years of experience both in the court room and as a conman, he knows the ins and outs of the law pretty well.
- Connections: He often "knows a guy, who knows a guy." Someone to do his dirty work for him. Examples include Mike Ehrmantraut, a former PI who keep s tabs on important clients, Huell Babineaux, his body guard for his office who also helps him with cons like lifting things off of people without them noticing and making a spare set of keys to steal Howard Hamlin's car, and his "vacuum repairman" who can make you disappear and get you a new identity, for a price.
- 20% of his silver tongue? It may look like a guy that makes up a just barely passable lie.
- 20% of Legal Knowledge? A guy who read a book or two on criminal law and pick up "a thing or two." He's knowledgable but no lawyer.
- 20% of Connections: Maybe knows one guy you can call to get you out of a jam or two from time to time.
He's relatively out of shape. He has bad knees and is seen getting winded after only a few punches when in a boxing match with Howard Hamlin.

About This Character
May. 9th, 2023 04:55 pmAbout
In his younger years, he was a conman. In his hometown of Cicero, Illinois, he was known as Slippin' Jimmy for his slip-n'-falls during the winter time. He would slip on patches of ice and make such a scene that he would gain sympathy and money from people around. One of these slip-n'-falls resulted in him damaging his knees that continue to bother him in his older years.
He would pull cons in Cicero with his best friend, Marco into his adult years until he got arrested for doing a "Chicago Sunroof" on his ex-wife's lover's car while there were children inside.
His older brother Chuck would come and help him under the condition that he straighten himself out and move to Albuquerque, New Mexico with him. He did so and worked in the HHM (Hamlin Hamlin and McGill) Law Firm. After a while there, Jimmy decided he wanted to be a lawyer like Chuck and Kim Wexler, a woman he was fond of and respected who worked there. He moved to the back of a Vietnamese nail salon that later doubled as his office when he started his own law practice.
Saul Goodman is extremely sleazy. This is shown in many ways in the shows Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul. Saul was shown as corrupted. He often "knew a guy who knew a guy" despite not wanting his own hands to be dirtied with violence.
In Breaking Bad, he was shown making plenty of lewd remarks. For example, he was seen telling his assistant Franchesca: "Man, you are killing me with that booty" and flirting with Skyler White in front of Walter, her husband, by saying: "Clearly, his taste in women is the same as his taste in lawyers: only the best, with just the right amount of dirty."
Saul is witty and loquacious to a fault. He is known for his smart remarks and quips. He is full of movie and TV show references and often uses these to explain his points better and lighten the mood in tense situations. Humor is his defense mechanism a lot of times as well for the same reasons.
His silver tongue can talk him out of a lot of situations. When threatened, Saul immediately opens his mouth and starts spilling anything he knows and saying anything he can to save himself. He also has the tendencies to talk himself into trouble as well but he can just keep talking until he gets out of it again.
Saul can be cowardly. One good threat and he folds like a lawn chair. This is seen many times in both Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul. A few examples include when Walter and Jesse wanted him to be their lawyer. The kidnapped him and put him in front of an open grave in the desert and held him at gunpoint. He agreed to help them right there. Walter was seen getting in his face in the last few seasons of the show saying "We're not done until I say we're done." when Saul threatened to quit. This was enough to convince Saul to continue to work with him because Saul knew Walter was capable of seriously hurting or killing him.
Another example is in the second episode in Better Call Saul. Tuco Salamanca pulled him into his house at gunpoint and said "Talk." Jimmy immediately spilled everything he knew and started trying to convince Tuco to let himself and the twins go.
He is incredibly cynical. No matter what, he's always looking out for his own best interest. Always on the lookout for the quickest way to make his money or save himself. A prime example of Saul looking out for himself is when Walter and Jesse were arguing in his office after Walter agreed to work with Gus Fring, Jesse became outraged when he learned Saul agreed to work with Walter for a cut of $3 million. Saul only shrugged and said: "It's the way of the world, kid. Go with the winner."
This and the quote "The ends justify the means" could all be life mottos for this character. When one of his schemes made Kim Wexler, his lover and, later, wife, look foolish in front of her bosses, she was angry with him and he couldn't understand what he did wrong. Their plan was working perfectly now.
Jimmy McGill, Saul Goodman and Gene Talkevic are all the same person. Gene and Saul are personas Jimmy created for two separate reasons: Gene Talkevic, a manager at Cinnabon in Nebraskan, was created to hide his identity after things fell through with Walter White and Jesse Pinkman. Saul Goodman was created for confidence, to bury the guilt he felt for the lives he ruin, and as a lawyer persona for his career advancement.
Jimmy had the tendency to only look out for himself but he did things for two other people in his life: Chuck McGill, his older brother, and Kim Wexler, his former lover and now ex-wife.
Chuck
Jimmy took care of his older brother for years because he loved him and held much respect for him. He was the only family Jimmy had left after both of their parents died. Jimmy would bring Chuck his food, groceries, gas for his stove and oil for his lanterns because Chuck couldn't leave his house or go to work anymore due to his development of EHS (Electromagnetic Hypersensitivity) that gave him a physical reaction to electricity.
Only when Chuck revealed to him that Jimmy "never really mattered all that much to him" did Jimmy stop caring for Chuck. He surrendered the responsibility of caring for Chuck to Howard Hamlin and got Chuck's insurance to drop him. Chuck later killed himself and jimmy believes this was his fault since Chuck did this because his insurance denied the existence of his illness and terminated his claim.
Kim
Kim would support him, no matter what he chose to do. She loved him very much but they ended up getting a divorce after Howard Hamlin was killed by Lalo Salamanca. She confessed that she was "having too much fun" with him and that the two of them were bad for the people around them.
Jimmy felt like he ruined not only Kim and Chuck's lives but also the life of Howard Hamlin due to him and Kim trying to make Hamlin look like a cocaine addict. That was all people would know Howard as for years until Kim Wexler confessed to what happened to her and Jimmy's involvement with Howard's murder. He also holds guilt for the people who got killed during his involvement with Walter White and Jesse Pinkman and the lives of the victims' families.
This is a great way to describe him because while he does have good intentions, he tends to mess up and make things worst for himself.
The main take away from this is: Saul Goodman is a shell of who he used to be. His almost comedically exaggerated lawyer persona is what he hides his guilt from all the lives he ruined. Jimmy McGill is still there under all this. It takes extreme situations for the mask to crack as he has spent years crafting it.

May. 8th, 2023 03:39 pmOkay so I'm pretty easy here. I don't have any particular triggers people need to be concerned about. Just the following:
1. No rape/Non-Con
2. No incest
3. No Pedophilia or under age things
Basically anything else is fine. Please ask if you have something in mind that you are not sure about in DMs. I will put trigger warnings on potentially triggering content so no one is caught off guard. Please do the same so that everyone may have a safe experience on this site.
Rules
1. No one-liners. I like to write paragraphs when I write and match length with people and 1 paragraph (5 lines) per response is the lowest I'll take.
2. If you want to do NSFW content, DM me first and we can talk about what you may want to try. I don't do smut very often unless the chemistry is AMAZING or unless it is important to plot.
3.Put Trigger Warnings on potentially triggering content. This is less for me and more for others in the community. I will do the same in my posts.
4.Be respectful. This is a universal rule honestly. No homophobia, racism, transphobia or anything of that sort out of character. This is plain and simple.
4.b. A continuation of Rule 4, sometimes characters do things that we wouldn't do ourselves. This should also go without saying but, hate the character, not the player. What this means is, if a character is a jerk, know that this does not always reflect the views of the person playing it. If there is something Saul/Jimmy does that upsets you that you feel you need to discuss with me, please do so.
5. Do not kill off this character without talking to me first. I put a lot of work into this one's application and threads and stuff and I ask that you do not perminently kill him off without coming to me and asking first.
Can I Fourthwall or Threadjack?
For those who don't know, Fourthwalling is when someone tells the character it is fictional and threadjacking is when you see a thread happening between two characters and you jump into the thread and start interacting.
Please ask before you do any of this. It is likely alright to fourthwall if it's one on one and with threadjacking, check the tags and ask if you can join. Sometimes things are a private thread, sometimes they are open. Ask if there are no tags or if you are not sure.
Can I Bully/Injure/Beat Up This Character?
Yes!
If you are a fan of Breaking Bad or Better Call Saul, you know this character gets beat up on screen and insulted PLENTY.
I only ask that if you plan on anything permanent like paralysis, for example, DM me first and ask.

With Saul Goodman/Jimmy McGill, I have several canon ships. Here is a list of characters I ship with this character:
